‘It’s something I feel I have to do’: Surgical head Mendez heading to Bolivia on humanitarian leave

Mendez is taking a six-month unpaid leave to provide pandemic support in Bolivia.

Dr. Ivar Mendez, a global leader and innovator in brain surgery and robotics, is stepping away from his adopted homeland to temporarily return to his native country and offer his expertise during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Calling it a “humanitarian endeavour,” Mendez is taking a six-month unpaid leave from his role as head of surgery at the University of Saskatchewan to provide pandemic support in Bolivia. The leave is set to begin Jan. 1, the U of S announced on Friday.

“I am making a personal contribution, one that is important. It’s something that I feel I have to do,” Mendez said.
